Not only that, Dionne also gets the use of Amy Winehouse’s backing band and producer Jon Moon, who worked on the deluxe edition of AW’s Back To Black album. Oh yes, our Dionne loves vintage soul and girl groups, so the album is pretty much an amalgamation of all of that – to decent effect too.

Yes, 12 tracks of vintage girl soul and ska, some tracks obvious to all, others being just a little more obscure. You’ve probably been hooked by ‘Mama Said‘ track (which featured Amy Winehouse on backing vocals when performed on primetime BBC recently), which is pretty representative of the whole album. Although, as you might imagine, it does have its ups and downs.

For me, the more ‘obvious’ covers are the weakers tracks, presumably because tracks like ‘My Boy Lollipop’, ‘Beechwood 45789′ and ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ are so firmly fixed in my mind that any deviation just sounds like a sub-standard cover. And while Amy’s band are a decent combo, they’re no Funk Brothers (in reference to the latter two tracks). Saying that, ‘Two Can Have A Party’ is probably the cheeriest bit of pop you’ll hear this year.

But others fair much better. Both album opener ‘Tell Him‘ and Jacko cover ‘With A Child’s Heart‘ are superb calling cards for that amazing voice, while ‘Foolish Little Girl‘ adds a ska twist to the Shirelles ‘63 original, ‘He’s So Fine‘ works as a stripped down piece of vintage-style R&B/soul and Aretha (and Stevie Wonder)’s ‘Until You Come Back To Me’ will have you listening in disbelief – and wondering what that voice will be like when it actually matures.

Pick of the tracks? For me, the last two – a funky take on soul standard ‘Am I The Same Girl’ and some great ska/soul/pop in the form of ‘Oh Henry’ – not quite up there with the Millie Small version, but not far off.

If the snippets you’ve heard on TV and radio have tempted you in, you’ll not be disappointed with the Introducing Dionne Bromfield. It’s no instant classic, but it’s a great calling card and hints at something great for the future. In the meantime, it’s a nice selection of classic soul and ska with a twist that’s certainly worth checking out if that’s your bag.

Klein - A Devil’s Bargain
